Transformer Load Tap Changer Controls, parallel operation
Many plants utilize a parallel feed strategy through two transformers, often identical, to ensure uninterrupted power flow to their operations, often with the low side tie-breaker closed. This mode of operation has several considerations:
Tap Changers, if not controlled in a coordinated fashion, will eventually settle into a mode where circulating currents add unnecessary stress and losses onto the transformers. A discussion on this can be downloaded
here.
Even with parallel controls, situations can arise where breaker action can destabilize circulating current or other parallel control schemes. Beckwith Electric developed the Delta Var method of parallel Tap Changer controls to expand the range of situations where parallel operation can still provide benefits. A brief discussion comparing the various parallel schemes can be downloaded
here
.
As power conditions change in the transmission grid, there may be reason to consider operating a parallel fed plant with the low side tie breaker open, and transfer the loads in the event of interruption on a feeder circuit. Motor Bus Transfer schemes are used in a variety of plants click

Automating Older Substations without a rebuild!
Problem:
How to gain information out of older substations without a major replacement of older electro-mechanical relays, or upgrading the SCADA system?
Solution:
Consider the SATEC concept of Add-on to Automate. Use existing cut-outs, and existing field wiring, but gain information!

Problems with Power Quality in Electrical System
Problem:
Modern technology in industrial plants has "polluted" the power quality in our electrical system, requiring both capacitors for power factor correction and harmonic filters to remove unwanted harmonics. More information on the background and solution to this problem can be downloaded
here.
